What to Do In an Emergency

Water Damage

DO’S

  • Identify the source of the incoming water and if possible, stop it or call the DKI professionals to help.
  • Turn off all electrical appliances in and around the area affected by water to reduce electrical hazards. Unplug and remove any small electrical devices located on wet carpet or surface.
  • Turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas. Unplug and remove any small electrical devices currently located on wet carpet or surfaces.
  • Limit hazards such as slip/fall and electrical shock.
  • If damage is extensive, notify/file a claim with your insurance company.
  • Act quickly!---Call Hudson Valley Contracting & DKI immediately to address the loss. Time is of the essence with water damage.

DON’T

  • DO NOT DELAY calling the team at DKI
  • DO NOT TURN OFF power if the circuit box is wet. Call your company to turn it off instead!
  • DO NOT ACTIVIATE THE HVAC SYSTEM IF IT HAS BEEN DIRECTLY CONTACTED BY WATER, or it might serve as a means of spread contamination.
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE OR DEMO or any areas that may contain ASBESTOS.
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean up any water that may be contaminated with raw sewage.
  • MAKE SURE EMERGENCY ACCESS IS AVAILABLE to contaminated areas.

Fire Damage

  • Air out the house to reduce smoke odor (if the outside temp is above 60 degress).
  • Discard open food packages, due to contamination.
  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean—soot on your hands can damage upholstery, drapes, walls and all woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rug and carpet traffic areas to prevent more soiling.
  • Clean and protect chrome on the kitchen and bathroom fixtures, trim and appliances with a light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • Wipe residue from porcelain bath fixtures to prevent etching.
  • If the electricity is off, empty the freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Wash off house plants on both sides of the leaves.
  • Change the air filter on your furnace if blower is operating.
  • Remove pets (especially birds) to clean environments.

SEWAGE

  • Always wear rubber gloves and avoid skin contact with any contaminated materials.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly to avoid infections.
  • Keep children and the elderly away from contaminated area! They are especially vulnerable to health risks.
  • Avoid tracking contaminated material into unaffected areas.
  • Do not attempt to decontaminate surfaces with sprays and other over-the-counter germicidal products which will not fully disinfect contaminated

  • Disposal of all the food exposed to sewage waters including all bottled drinks and products in jars. The parts under the seal of jars and bottles cannot be adequately disinfected.
  • Disposal of all medicines, cosmetics and other personal care items that have been in contact with sewage waters.
  • Removal all furniture, loose rugs, etc. from the area. Professional decontamination at our DKI facility with our certified technicians.
  • Removal of all wet and damp materials and get rid of soaked carpets, water-damaged mattresses, pillows and plush toys.
  • Start specialized air circulation to reduce odors and mold growth by placing specialized air movers and scrubbers.
